It’s linked to the knowledge-rich curriculum ideology, pushed by DfE and others, making a monolith out of student vocabulary variations: as an English teacher, I always valued the importance of vocabulary, but not in treating it as an absolute and doing so at the exclusion of vocabularies not recognised in its framing. Don’t expect I’ve made that simpler (!) but it stops me from swearing…
